I’ll admit I’d been avoiding Samantha Hansen, and even her husband Greg. But it’s difficult to avoid fellow ‘Lakers’. It seems that everyone who lives along Lake Winataka is bound by an invisible string which pulls them into Duffy’s Hardware, the Crickety Barrel Tavern or the Green Apple Grocer at the same time as another Laker you haven’t seen lately, or as in my case, have been trying to avoid.
I figured I better stop by the Hansen’s home, after quite awkwardly ducking behind the bulk-food bins to avoid Sam at the GAG. Whoever thought of naming a place that sold food items with that acronym is a bigger mystery now than little Mary Hansen being found, I suppose, but there isn’t a soul who doesn’t find a little pleasure saying the Green Apple Grocer’s shorthand name.
I dropped in under the pretense of once again trying to get them to donate their “Stag Between Two Trees in a Snowstorm” etching by Edmund Winataka. They had the last known print from the town’s founder, first mayor and aspiring artist. They said ‘nope’, I said I’ll ask them again next month. Things are settling back down into their groove, it seems.
